About Firm Upgrade

We exist because legal tech changed faster than anyone could keep up

Attorneys and staff are being asked to master platforms that update weekly, evaluate AI tools that didn't exist last quarter, and protect client confidentiality through all of it. That's a job in itself. It's ours.

Why We Do This

The gap nobody was closing

Here's what we kept seeing: firms buying excellent software and using a tenth of it. Attorneys pasting client information into free AI tools because nobody set up a safe alternative. Practices running million-dollar caseloads over internet connections a coffee shop would find embarrassing.

The vendors won't close that gap — they sell licenses. Generic IT shops can't — they don't know a trust ledger from a to-do list. It takes people who understand both how law firms actually work and how this technology actually behaves.

So that's what Firm Upgrade is: a partner that speaks both languages, keeps its own training as current as the tools, and measures success by whether your people are actually better at their jobs.

Credentials

Certified, current, and accountable

Firm Upgrade is led by Shaun Smith, founder and Clio AI Certified consultant (Legal AI Fundamentals). Every page on this site — including the private and local AI guide and the SB 574 readiness page — is reviewed by the person who would actually run your engagement.

Clio AI Certified

Holder of Clio's Legal AI Fundamentals Certification — covering AI prompting best practices, cybersecurity considerations, tool evaluation, and applying AI in real-world legal settings.

AI-Native Practice

We use the tools we recommend — Claude, ChatGPT, and agentic platforms — in our own operations, on business plans. Before recommending something new, we run a bounded pilot, and we tell you when we haven't.

Always Current

Following legal tech releases and rule changes is part of the job. When a change affects a workflow a client uses — a platform update, a new term, a law like SB 574 — clients on a care plan get a dated note with what it means for them.

Who We Serve

Built for the firms doing the work

Solo & Small Firms

No IT department? We become the technology strategy. Right-sized engagements where every dollar has to earn its place.

Midsize Firms

Clio's 2025 report on mid-sized firms found AI adoption rose from 19% to 93% in one year. We keep that growth organized, governed, and trained.

Practice Groups & Departments

Focused engagements for a litigation group rolling out research AI or an intake team rebuilding its pipeline — without boiling the firm-wide ocean.

Let's talk about your firm.

A conversation costs nothing. Tell us where technology hurts and we'll tell you honestly whether we can help.
