Legal Research & AI

AI research platforms, rolled out with citations you can trust

Lexis+ with Protégé. Westlaw Advantage and CoCounsel. Midpage. The research stack has been rebuilt around AI — we help you pick the right platform and train your attorneys to use it defensibly.

The Platforms

Three research ecosystems, one honest comparison

Every vendor claims their AI is the future of research. We work in all of them, and we'll tell you which one fits your practice — and which claims to take with a grain of salt. The technology assessment puts that comparison in writing.

LexisNexis

Lexis+ with Protégé

A personalized AI assistant that adapts to your jurisdiction and practice area, runs structured AI workflows, and flags unverifiable citations with Shepard's® Verify. Protégé Vault analyzes up to 100,000 documents per matter. We handle rollout, workflow design, and attorney training.

Thomson Reuters

Westlaw Advantage & CoCounsel

Thomson Reuters' agentic assistant runs deep research grounded in Westlaw primary law, Practical Law, and your own documents — with end-to-end drafting and review. In TR's commissioned study, roughly a third of time on research, review, and drafting came off the clock. We make that real at your firm.

Midpage

Midpage

AI-native research over comprehensive, current US case law with a proprietary AI citator to confirm cases are still good law. Its Claude connector is the sleeper feature: research, cite-checking, and drafting inside the AI assistant your firm already uses. Startup pricing, serious capability.

The Differentiator

The Claude + Midpage research desk

Midpage ships an official MCP (Model Context Protocol) connector for Claude — one of a small number of legal research tools wired directly into Claude Desktop. The result: an attorney can ask Claude to find candidate authority, check it against Midpage's citator, and draft the memo — in one conversation, on a business plan whose settings we've reviewed. The attorney still reads and verifies what goes into the work.

Setting it up well takes more than a login: the subscription and connector configuration — part of our AI adoption work — and the attorney training that keeps everyone from over-trusting the output.

  • Midpage + Claude Pro/Team/Enterprise configured end to end
  • Verification workflows — AI-suggested authority lands in a citation list the responsible attorney personally verifies before filing
  • Attorney training on prompting, limits, and ethical duties of supervision

Common Questions

Research AI FAQs

How do we protect against hallucinated citations?
Three layers: platforms with built-in citators (Shepard's, KeyCite, Midpage's citator), a firm workflow where AI-suggested authority goes into a citation list rather than straight into a brief, and training so attorneys understand these tools assist judgment rather than replace it. In California, SB 574 adds that citations in court filings must be personally verified by the responsible attorney, so we design the workflow to record that verification against the version filed. A tool can help assemble and check sources; it can't do the attorney's verification for them.
We already pay for Westlaw or Lexis. Is this just about buying more?
Often the opposite. Many firms pay for AI tiers they don't use, or maintain two research subscriptions where one would do. The assessment looks at what you have before recommending anything new.
Is Midpage really a substitute for the big two?
For some practices it can be; for others it's a complement. Midpage covers US case law, statutes, and regulations with AI-native tooling at a lower price point — but it doesn't replicate everything in the Lexis or Westlaw ecosystems (secondary sources, practice guides). We'll compare them against your actual research work, ideally in a short pilot.
